Hello my name is Kenny Murray. I was born in Pitney Village I went to Star of the Sea and Holy Spirit high school. Billy and I were close friends, throughout high school. We played Babe Ruth baseball, but on opposite teams. This one game at the field behind Bader field where it was about 425 feet to left field and I was the left fielder, Billy hit the ball and it must’ve went into the clouds it was so high because it took forever to come down and Billy was yelling from home plate don’t you catch that ball, don’t you catch that ball! But I did. And I wasn’t too far from the fence so this was a major league fly ball. We also played freshman football for Holy Spirit. Billy was one heck of a boxer also. And Yes , every girl wanted him.
I just came across his obituary today while looking for my brother Jim’s obituary who died day before yesterday, February 16, 2022.
And if I remember correctly I think it was a football injury that kept Billy out of the major leagues.
And I must add that Billy was easily as popular in Atlantic City, as was any of those photos on the walls at the White House sub shop.
Life is so short. One minute you have not a care in the world. The next minute, you’re so old, you could care less what happens in the world.
I lost touch with Billy when I went to Vietnam in 1968 with the Marine Corps. But my memories of him are like they happened yesterday.
