John A. Sharra 90 of Ventnor City, passed away peacefully of natural causes on October 7, 2023. He was residing at Meadowview Nursing Home for the past year and recently celebrated his 90th birthday with his loving family present. John was born on September 14, 1933 and grew up during the depression years in the Ducktown section of Atlantic City. He attended St. Michaels School and Atlantic City High School and later barbering school in Philadelphia, PA. John opened his first location-Johnny's Barber Shop at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Stenton Place in Atlantic City in 1962. He relocated his business to Ventnor in the 1980's to the corner of Atlantic and Richards Avenues. Both shops were gathering places for locals to sit and pass the time chatting about local issues. "Johnny" as he was known to the generations that sat in his barber chair, was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of Atlantic City history and the history of the Cinema. Visitor would spend hours going through his library of books on both subjects. He touched the lives of many. John was predeceased by his wife Anita (Giovinazzo) of 68 years and daughter-in-law Mary (Chan) Sharra. He is survived by his daughter Barbara; sons Joseph (Rebecca) and John; and four grandchildren, Danielle, Carina, Jade and John. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated for John Sharra 11:00am Friday, October 13, 2023 at St Michael's Church, 10 North Mississippi Avenue Atlantic City, NJ. Relatives and friends may begin to gather at the church from 10:00am. (parking in the rear of church off Georgia Avenue). The Rite of Committal will be offered at Holy Cross Cemetery Route 40 in Mays Landing following Mass. Arrangements by the Gormley Funeral Home LLC AC. (gormleyfuneralhomellc.com).
